NEWMAN AT A GLANCE

The William and Anita Newman Library was dedicated on May 19, 1994 after an extensive, award-winning renovation designed by Davis Brody Bond LLP. The building was originally constructed in 1894 for the Metropolitan Street Railway Company of New York, then taken over by the Lexington Company, and served as a power station for the City's cable car system.

The re-design has received numerous awards, including:

  • American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Excellence in Design;
  • Award of Excellence for Library Architecture, presented jointly by the American Library Association and the American Institute of Architects;
  • Library Buildings Award, presented by the Library Administration and Management Section of the American Library Association;
  • Certificate of Merit from the Municipal Art Society of New York;
  • Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award, presented by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
  • Winner of the 2003 ACRL award for Excellence in Academic Libraries

The library is a part of the 330,000 square foot Library and Technology Center, which also houses a campus computing center, a conference center, and several administrative offices of the College.

The library has a seating capacity of 1,450. There are 2 faculty study rooms, as well as 11 graduate student carrels, 20 undergraduate student carrels, and 29 group study rooms (13 for large groups and 16 for small groups). The collections include more than 450,000 print volumes, 160,000 eBooks, and over 2 million units of microform. Approximately 80 PC workstations are available to access the library's collection of electronic resources. An active library instruction program is supported by three computer classrooms.
