Quotes from US management on Argentine operations

The following firms did not respond to the questionnaire (due to large volumes, as mentioned previously). However they did contribute their overall opinion with regards to their Argentine-based operations. The first three were given via a telephone interview, while the last two were received via a memorandum signed by the individual listed below.

"Today Argentina is considered all over the world as an economic model, not only for its economic reforms but also for its recent growth and productivity increase. After the Mexican crisis Argentina has turned out to be the first option to invest, especially for Union Camp. "

Craig Mac Clelland, CEO, Union Camp

"Although we are landing in Argentina with a small operation, we are settling down in this country forever. We are not interested in being at the top of the ranking right now, but in going step by step in our operations in Argentina. "

Camilo Salazar, Vice President, The Principal Group

"Argentina is a unique country, and an integral part of the fast growing region of South America. Wal-Mart's launch into Argentina comes at a time of economic consolidation, in which strong work ethics will be the foundation for positive change. "

Arthur Emmanuel, Vice President, South America Wal-Mart

"Argentina has abolished external barriers, privatized industries, made people come back to work, stopped inflation and negotiated its external debt. This situation has created a special context for US investment into the country. Most of it will indeed come from the United States, so we are convinced we are going to generate a lot of customers for this hotel."

J.W Marriott, President Marriott International

"We are mainly interested in Argentina because it has a huge market and is located close to other countries where we will be able to export. Argentina will become a toy producer and exporter, especially to Mercosur countries."

"Americans want to enter Argentina. The reasons: a medium and stable market with a very good protection for foreign investment. Other US companies need to realize this and take advantage of the favorable climate existing in Argentina today. "

Arturo Cafarelli, Vice President Mattel Argentina
