As you can see, very little changed on the electoral map between the elections of 2000 and 2004. In the 2000 election, most of New England (with the exception of New Hampshire,) the Mid-Atlantic States, the Pacific states, New Mexico, and the Upper Midwest voted for Democratic candidate Al Gore, while Republican candidate George W. Bush won most of the South, West, and Midwest.
The states that changed hands between the two elections are highlighted in the map. In 2004, New Mexico and Iowa voted for George W. Bush after going Democratic in 2000, and New Hampshire went to John Kerry (Democrat) after going with Bush in 2000. With the shifts in population and changing number of delegates for each state, the Republicans gained fifteen electoral votes between the two elections.
The Northeast and Western states have voted Democratic since the 1992 elections, while the rest of the recent pattern has held for the past two elections. Most of the Republican votes have come from the South, West, and Mid-West.
