As part of CUNY's license agreement with ESRI, the makers of ArcGIS, current students, faculty, and staff of Baruch are eligible to register for a number of free online classes and self-paced tutorials to learn about GIS in general and ArcGIS in particular.
There is a three step process for registering for the courses, which involves: creating an ESRI training account on ESRI's website, emailing the geospatial librarian to request courses using your Baruch email address, and entering course codes sent from the librarian into your training account page to register. In order to take the courses, you will need access to the ArcGIS software and you will need to download and store course data on some form of media (if you're a student, you'll need to use a usb flash drive or portable hard drive). The basic introductory course is called Learning ArcGIS.
For complete information on how to register, how to access ArcGIS software, and to see the full list of available courses, visit the Baruch Geoserver. The geoserver is the library's repository for digital geographic data and information about GIS on campus. You can connect to it from anywhere on campus via computers that are hardwired to the campus network. You cannot connect to the server via a wireless connection, and it is not available off campus. On campus, visit this url: http://gserv, or select Baruch Geoserver from the library's database page. From the geoserver homepage, there is a quick link to the ESRI course info at the top of the page.
