ESRI Virtual Campus Courses at Baruch

Frank Donnelly, Geospatial Librarian

As part of CUNY's license agreement with ESRI, the makers of ArcGIS, current members of CUNY are eligible to register for a number of free online classes and self-paced tutorials to learn about GIS in general and ArcGIS in particular. These courses cover a wide range of topics and include documentation, tutorials, exercises, quizzes, and in some cases, online presentations. Once you finish a particular course, you receive a certificate documenting that you have completed it. The following course registration instructions are for current members of Baruch College only.

To register for ESRI Virtual Campus courses, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a current Baruch student, faculty, or staff member in order to register. Prospective students, recent graduates, alumni, and retired faculty and staff are not eligible under the site license to take these courses. Current members of other CUNY institutions that use ArcGIS will need to contact the ArcGIS administrator for your campus in order to take these courses.
  • The courses can be taken from any location, but you will need to have access to ArcGIS version 9.0, 9.1, or 9.2. Faculty or staff who are interested in getting a copy for your campus computer should work with your department or school's IT staff to request a copy through Baruch's site license representative. Students can access ArcGIS 9.2 software in the following labs: VC6-145, VC6-150, VC6-155, VC6-165, and on the south side (to the right of the turnstyle at the back of the room) of the main BCTC lab on the 6th floor of the library building.
  • To take the courses you will need to download datasets for the various exercises. You will need to store the data on some form of media: a usb drive, portable hard drive, or network space.

To register:

  • Go to ESRI's website and create an ESRI training account. Click on the link to My Virtual Campus Courses to register. You will use this account to manage and access courses that you register for.
  • Select courses from the list below and email your request to the Geospatial Librarian at the Newman Library: Francis_Donnelly@baruch.cuny.edu. It is recommended that you copy and paste the course names from this page directly into the body of your email. Many of the courses are version specific, so you will want to verify which version you are using before making a request (Baruch College is currently using ArcGIS 9.2 ArcInfo). PLEASE NOTE: All requests must be made using a valid Baruch email address. Requests sent from personal email accounts (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc) will not be processed. Please include your status (student, faculty, or staff) and department affiliation in your email.
  • Your request will be processed within 24 hours. Requests made over the weekend will be processed on Monday. Once your request has been processed you will receive an email with course codes. You can then log in to your account on the ESRI training website and register for your courses using these codes. You will be able to access your course material for one year from the date of registration.
