Basic Data/Company Directories

definition:

Company directories, in print or online, help identify whether a company is public or private and whether it is the parent company or a subsidiary.  They typically offer a brief business description,  a list of officers and directors, and the company's address, phone and Web URL. Often they include sales or revenue data. In addition to identifying companies, directories can be used to create lists of companies in specific industry sectors or by location.


RefUSA
RefUSA provides descriptions of over 14 million U.S. businesses and is one of the largest databases covering small businesses.  Find companies by name, location (city, state or zip code), SIC code or yellow pages heading.  Screen a list of companies by size, sales, location and other variables.

Standard and Poor's Corporation Records
Standard and Poor's Register

Online through S&P NetAdvantage
These two company directories are part of the online portal, Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage. Search by company name or ticker and choose "Register"  for descriptions of over 100,000 public and private companies or choose "Corporation Records" for profiles of over 7,000 public companies. These directories can be used to screen for companies using various financial variables.

Ward's Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies

One of the largest directories of private companies in the U.S., these volumes include address, officers and brief financial information in both tabular and listing format. Also includes company listings by industry.

CCH Capital Changes
This database offers a complete "Corporate Capital History" of all public U.S. companies. It provides a chronology of name changes, mergers, acquisitions, and stock splits from the incorporation of the company until the present.

Corporate Affiliations
The company profiles in this database include a full company "Hierarchy" list with names and descriptions of all subsidiaries, affiliates and divisions of the parent company. Search by the name of the parent company, subsidiary, or affiliate for a company profile.  Use the database to build lists of companies by location (e.g., German companies with offices in Chicago), or by industry.  Covers major U.S. and foreign companies.

COMPANY PROFILES

definition:

Many databases can be used to construct a company profile that includes financial statistics, ownership information, a business description and company history.  Databases can also be used to identify competitors or build a list of comparable companies. 

Mergent Online 
Reference 2nd Floor - Index Table 5B - HG4907.M68 
The comprehensive company entries in Mergent Online cover public companies in the U.S. and major international companies. The profiles include history, officers list, financials, debt information, subsidiary/affiliate listings, and corporate news. The database can be searched by many financial or descriptive variables to identify comparable companies.

Hoovers
Hoover's provides in-depth company profiles that include financials, corporate ownership, history, biographies of key officers and a list of competitors for a large selection of U.S. and international public, private and subsidiary companies. Hoovers includes links to corporate web sites and stock quote and price graphs.

Business and Company Resource Center
This database brings together a wide variety of resources for building a company profile. Search by company name and then choose from the tabs (at the top of the page) coverage of financials, news, investment reports, histories, rankings or products/brands.

Standard and Poor's Stock Reports
Online through S&P NetAdvantage
The S&P Stock Reports are the industry standard for U.S. public company profiles.  Known for their excellent business summaries, the reports include a brief analyst commentary, key financials and ratios, peer group analysis, Wall Street consensus estimates and the industry outlook. In the "Publications Search Box" (at the right) select "Stock Reports" and enter the ticker or company name.

Factiva
Factiva's company profiles are found by selecting the "Companies/Markets" tab (from the top of the page). Profiles include a business description, list of competitors, current news stories and press releases. Scroll to the bottom of the page under "Reports" and select  "Financial Snapshot plus Profile" for a detailed financial profile including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, ratios, stock performance, and company history.

LexisNexis
LexisNexis includes company information in its "Business" section (choose "Business" from the menu at the top) which includes: SEC Filings & Reports, company profiles and a company comparison tool.

CEO Express
CEO Express provides links to major Websites that can be used for doing business research. Links to business Websites are listed under a variety of business topics including "Company Research," "SEC," "Quotes and Market News," "Investing and IPO Research," and "Financial Markets."

- FINANCIALS -   

definition:

All public companies are required to file financial reports with the SEC each year. Many companies include their annual report to the shareholders and current SEC filings on their Websites. These are usually found in the section called "Investor Relations," "Financial Information," or "About Us".


Public Companies/SEC Filings/Annual Reports

Edgar Online’s I-Metrix
Edgar Online's I-Metrix provides full text access to SEC filings along with ownership data and earnings estimates. Locate specific filings by type, IPO, or topic. I-Metrix Analytics provide financial statement data in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) which tags each line item of data for export to Excel and can be used for interactive model building and comparative analysis across companies, industries or trading exchange. 

Thomson Research  
The Thomson database of corporate documents includes both U.S. and international company filings.  Annual reports and documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the London Stock Exchange are available as well as reports from companies listed on many foreign stock exchanges.  Thomson offers various options for printing including selecting parts of the reports or downloading financials (balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement) into spreadsheets.  The entire database can be screened by date, document type, registration type, SIC code, state, country or stock exchange. Thomson has the largest historical repository of reports including some dating back to the 1960’s.

SEC EDGAR
Companies are required to file financial reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the EDGAR database. EDGAR’s simple search engine can be used to find reports by company name or SIC code.  Real time filings are in “Latest Filings” and the “Historical EDGAR Archives” includes all reports filed since the inception of EDGAR in 1993. 

SECinfo
SECinfo, a database of EDGAR filings, is free to registered users on the Web.  It offers text searching of company reports, either “the recent reports or all filings” of a particular company. Reports have hyperlinked table of contents and financials can be downloaded into spreadsheets.  The home page offers direct access to recent filings by type (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, etc.) as well as lists of today’s filings, yesterday’s filings, or the most recent filings.  SECinfo also parses all 8-K filings so that users can find companies that have announced mergers, auditor changes, bankruptcy, de-listing, new management, or other significant events.

MergentOnline
Mergent Online covers both U.S. and major international companies. It provides access to only the latest 90 days of SEC filings.  Annual reports are available in PDF format but the coverage many vary from the latest three years of reports to more than 15 years depending on the company.

Factiva
SEC filings are available in Factiva from the “Companies/Markets” tab at the top of the page.  Enter the ticker or name of the company in the search box and then scroll down the column on the left and click on “SEC Filings.” (Factiva uses SECinfo as the source of its SEC collection).

Lexis/Nexis
LexisNexis offers a collection of SEC filings and the ability to search the text of these filings. To use this collection go to the list of Academic Search Forms (at the far left of the LexisNexis search screen), choose "Business" and then "SEC Filings and Reports."  Search for reports by ticker or company name and add any words or phrases.

Compustat
Compustat is a database that provides standardized financial data from the SEC filings of more than 13,000 companies in eighty countries.  It contains twenty years of annual and quarterly balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. Use this database to download historical financial data items for a particular company or group of companies.

United States Federal Regulatory Agencies
All companies within regulated industries (e.g., banks, utilities, airlines, trucking companies, telephone companies, broadcasters, insurance, etc.) must file reports with the appropriate Federal regulatory agency. Many of these reports contain detailed financial information. Agencies that require corporate reports include: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Reserve Board, Federal Deposit Insurance Commission, and the  Department of Transportation in TranStats.

COMPANY NEWS

definition:

News databases are useful for gathering information that changes over time like earnings or market share. Find announcements of corporate or capital changes such as mergers, stock splits, senior officer changes, or new product announcements. Search for articles that track trends or discuss corporate strategy.

ABI/Inform
The ABI/Inform database provides articles from over 1800 business periodicals, trade magazines and scholarly journals. Type a company name and select the "Company/Org" field. Type a subject term in the second line and select the "Subject" field. To determine the appropriate subject terms click on the "Topics" tab at the top of the screen.

Business Source Premier
This database offers full text access to nearly 2,300 scholarly, business and trade journals. Type a company name and select the "CO Company Entity" field from drop down menu; Add additional term(s) and select "SU Subject Terms". 

Factiva
Factiva is a comprehensive business news database with international coverage from over 9,000 sources. Retrieve articles from local, national and foreign sources including newswires, newspapers, trade and business journals and newsletters. Search for news using Factiva's "Intelligent Indexing" to select companies, subjects, industries or regions (open the + sign to browse or search).  Additional terms like the brand or product name or the name of the CEO can be entered in the search box at the top of the screen. 

Lexis/Nexis  
Lexis/Nexis includes coverage from newspapers, newsletters, trade and business magazines and newswires from around the world. For articles on mergers or acquisitions, finance or other company-related news, choose "Business News" or the "Industry/Market" section of "Business" (on left hand side of screen).  Type a company name and choose the "headline or lead paragraph" segment. Add term(s) describing the news item. Truncate to allow for variation in term (e.g., merg! for merger, merge, merged, merging, etc.).

This database contains articles from over 75 regional, state or city business journals.  It includes titles such as Crain's New York Business, Arizona Business and the Westchester County Business Journal. Especially useful for regional or local coverage of companies.

COMPANY ANALYSIS   

definition:

Market research reports and bank analysts' reports are prime sources of expert company analysis. They often include forecast information and discussion of marketing or management initiatives.  Business news databases can also be used to find case studies or articles from business magazines and trade journals. 


Euromonitor GMID
This database of market research reports covers consumer product industries in the United States and 52 other countries. Reports typically include channels of distribution, brand information, consumer demographics and buying habits, forecast data, and profiles of the major companies/brands within the industry. Six years of historic market size data are provided for over 330 consumer products. 

MarketResearch.com
A collection of market research reports covering over 2,000 industries and products. Download reports for competitive analysis, consumer behavior, product and market share information.

International Directory of Company Histories

This comprehensive directory, now in over 30 volumes, provides detailed histories of more than 3,200 large public, private and international companies.

Edgar Online’s I-Metrix
Edgar Online's I-Metrix provides full text access to SEC filings, ownership data, earnings estimates and company people. Locate specific filings by type, IPO, or topic. ThomsonONE Analytics
Available in the Subotnick Financial Services Center
This database includes analysts’ research reports and morning call notes. It also provides real-time consensus earning estimates and historical EPS data for companies in the United States and trading globally. To view analysts' reports choose a company and select "Research" from the drop down menu.

Value Line
Also Reserve Desk 2nd floor - HG4501.V26
Value Line's main section, Ratings & Reports, features company reports grouped by industry sectors. Each report consists of one page of  financial analysis with over 10 years of historical data including sales, profits, and earnings per share. Reports include share price projections and a financial forecast.

Morningstar
Morningstar provides in-depth financial information and access to Morningstar analyst opinions and recommendations for 1,000 stocks and 2,000 mutaul funds.

Mergers Acquistions News

CCH Capital Changes
This database provides detailed A to Z company listings of changes such as stock splits, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures. It has a complete "Corporate Capital History" for all public companies. Select "Capital Changes Report Summary" for the latest announcements of corporate changes. 

Thomson Research 
Thomson Research is a database of SEC filings and annual reports. Search for announcements of merger or acquisitions in 13D or 14D filings. Search for other major "material events" in 8K filings. Type the company ticker in the "Quick Company Search" box (at the left) and choose either the "Complete Filing History" or the "EDGAR Free Text Search".

SDC
Available at Reference Desk 2nd Floor
The SDC database provides details of mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and similar corporate transactions. Search by company name for specific deals. Select deal characteristics to create lists of deals of comparable size or value, for example, find mergers valued over $500 million in the food business since 1995.

 Each issue of Barrons, the well-known financial weekly, includes a wide range of financial data in every issue.

 

Reuters 3000 Xtra   
Available in the Subotnick Financial Services Center
Reuters 3000 Xtra provides real-time and historical stock price and market index data. It includes information on markets in the U.S. and international markets.
 
 Factiva
 Stock prices are found in the “Quotes” section of the "Companies/Markets" tab (at the top of the page).  The current stock quote appears with a 15 minute delay. Daily, weekly and monthly stock prices are available and can be downloaded into Excel.

 

Mergent
The capital history of public companies is included in the "Company Details" and "Long-Term Debt" sections of the Mergent company profiles.  All the company's outstanding debt issues are listed with a description, call dates and latest price ranges.  

 

Standard and Poor's Daily Stock Price Record

These annual volumes provide daily stock prices for companies listed on the New  York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Historical data begins in 1972.

Standard and Poors NetAdvantage
 NetAdvantage is a portal for many Standard & Poor's publications. The monthly Stock Guide and Bond Guide provide brief statistical snapshots of corporate stocks and bonds. The magazine, Credit Week, features articles and current financial analysis of companies and financial markets. The Bond Record provides month-end bond prices and ratings.

Yahoo Finance
This finance website offers current and historical stock quotes. For most stocks daily, weekly, and monthly quotes are available back to 1970. All closing prices are adjusted for stock splits. There is also a bond screener and a stock screener for selecting stocks or bonds based on various financial variables.

The Conference Board is an independent research organization that provides economic analysis of the U.S. economy.  Their research reports cover business and management issues including training, HR, compensation and corporate governance.  They often survey Fortune 500 companies and provide case studies and reports on best practices.

Emerald
This database is a collection of over 130 journals concentrated in the fields of management, HR, marketing, operations and training.

Factiva
Search for articles using Factiva's "Intelligent Indexing" to select companies and subjects (open the + sign to browse or search). To find subjects related to HR, browse "Management Issues" or Labor/Personnel Issues".

Data about the size of product markets, the estimated market share held by a company, or a ranking of companies within a particular industry, are often published by market research firms or specialized industry trade magazines. News databases are also valuable sources of information about market share, brands, and new product initiatives.

Advertising Age Web Site
The September issue entitled "100 Leading National Advertisers" features company profiles and contains market share data for major product categories. At the website, select "Data Center" then "Marketers" to find a copy of the "100 Leading National Advertisers."  Registration required.

Euromonitor GMID
This database of market research reports focuses on consumer product industries in the United States and 52 other countries. It includes demographic, social and economic statistics. Reports typically include channels of distribution, brand information, consumer demographics and buying habits, forecast data, and profiles of the major companies/brands within the industry. MarketResearch.com

Tablebase
This database extracts tabular data from selected magazines and trade publications.  Choose from the list of "Concept Terms" to search for market share, company and brand rankings, and other subjects.  In most cases the full text of the article is included along with the table.

Standard and Poor's Industry Surveys

The S&P surveys cover about 50 industries of interest to U.S. investors.  Open the "Industries" tab at the top of the page to select an industry.  Each survey includes an overview of the industry based on research by Standard and Poor's; describes current issues facing the industry; anlyzes major industry segments; and lists major companies in the industry.  There are also sections on how to analyze a company in that industry and how to find specific industry performance metrics.

FAITS. Faulkner's Advisory for Information Technology Studies
FAITS is a collection of market research reports covering industry sectors in information technology, telecommunications, and the Internet.  “Marketplace Reports” analyze industry trends and name the market leaders. Details about pricing strategies and sales channels are found in the "Product profiles" and the "Comparison & selection guides".  Profiles of leading companies are included.

This Website offers access to Duke University's archive of advertisements printed in U.S. and Canadian magazines and newspapers between 1911 and 1955. 

Brandchannel.com
Brandchannel is the weekly Web magazine published by Interbrand, consultants specializing in brand strategy and valuation.  Interbrand and Business Week rank the "Top 100 Global Brands" in the July issue of Business Week. Other surveys and research can be found by clicking on the "Press Room".

Brandweek
Each June Brandweek magazine issues a "Superbrands of the Year" report. It provides rankings, media expenditures and sales data for over 2,000 top brands and includes analysis of 25 major brand categories.
