Periodical publications (magazines, trade publications, scholarly journals, newspapers, and newsletters) are published on a regular, or serial, schedule. They provide various types of information (articles, essays, reports, literature reviews, interviews, transcripts), as well as different levels of analysis and detail. Other types of serial publications include yearbooks, conference proceedings and annual reviews. Many databases accessible through Newman Library contain the entire issues of periodicals including the full text of the content. The “My Account” feature in a number of databases allows you to set up electronic notification of when new issues are available online within a database. Some periodical titles, however, are embargoed by the publisher against appearing in a database for a certain period of time after they are published in print. Articles and illustrations by free lancers may also be absent from an online publication.
Periodical literature is particularly useful for the following types of information:
Current Information: Newspapers, magazines, trade publications and newsletters, journals and other serials are published more frequently than books and may be useful when looking for current information, scanning the environment, tracking events and identifying major players..
Detailed analysis: Journal articles can provide detailed analysis by scholars and authorities, and information on a particular aspect of a topic not easily found in books. Footnotes and bibliographies provide ways of validating and expanding research by noting which authors others frequently cite, what researchers or organizations and associations are collecting and disseminating information, and how theory is evolving.
Characteristics and Features of Different Types of Articles
Scholarly, peer-reviewed, academic journals
Scholarly articles provide theories, analysis and ideas rather than more general descriptions of business conditions. They appear in academic journals, and usually undergo a process of peer review, i.e., a review by qualified experts. This promotes a certain standard of research. Business Source Premier and ABI/Global are among those databases where retrieval can be limited to these types of articles.
Characteristics and features of scholarly and/or peer reviewed management journals:
Trade and Industry Publications
Trade journals are published by and for practitioners and can contain overviews of current business conditions, industry information, surveys and rankings, management profiles, trends and projections, technology, and web links. They may also publish special annual issues providing detailed industry surveys. Trade journals are supplemented by newsletters which appeal to specialized interest groups by keeping them informed of specific issues.
Characteristics and features of trade journals
Databases with significant trade journal inclusion in their
sources publications include Lexis-Nexis—(Business/Industry and Market
section) Factiva, Business and Company Resource Center, and ABI/GLOBAL. Reference
books located at the reference desk list special issues of many of these trade
journals:

IDENTIFYING and CLASSIFYING COMPANIES WITHIN AN INDUSTRY
Many industry surveys and databases use the government’s 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes to identify product categories and classify corporations within similar industries. Since the adoption of NAFTA, NAICS, the North American Industrial Classification System, has been implemented in Canada, Mexico and the US. It has been replacing and supplementing older SIC classifications, especially in the service and technology industries. NAICS-based statistics are now used to classify the 1997 Economic Census and other government reports.
