INTERNSHIP IN REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION

Policy:

The Information Services Division of The William and Anita Newman Library, Baruch College, is offering an internship for graduate students enrolled in ALA-accredited library schools. The program encourages leadership and the development of reference and instruction skills in an academic library setting. The internship gives participants the opportunity to gain professional experience prior to graduation and addresses the gap between library and information science theory and practice.  Interns will learn about the operation of various library divisions including collection development, attend meeting s, create a library guide, support librarians with class instructions, and assist with reference services by way of the Reference Desk, chat, and email.  Preference will be given to library students who are interested in pursuing a career in academic reference services.

Interns will:

  • be assigned to a mentor
  • work 150 hours during one semester
  • provide reference services appropriate to their level of expertise
  • create a library guide
  • attend library information services division meetings
  • develop an expertise in a subscription database (to be determined in consultation with a mentor), prepare and present this database to an undergraduate class, or:
  • work on a project in an area of reference services (to be determined in consultation with a mentor),  prepare and make a presentation to the  library staff

The library serves over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the Zicklin School of Business, the Weissman School of Arts & Sciences, and the School of Public Affairs.  Baruch College is ranked among the region's and the nation's top colleges by U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, and Princeton Review.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for the internship program must have completed at least 18 credits toward a master’s degree in library or information sciences at an ALA-accredited school, including a course in general reference services and online database searching.
